We certainly love to hear from authors who offer the written word especially to the youngsters so Cris we salute you and are excited to share the list of questions you were so kind to answer. So, without further ado: here is Cris

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

I learned language had power as a paperboy during the 1980 Presidential election and saw how Ronald Reagan was able to steer the conversation with keywords.

How do you think being a writer has helped you as a person?

Being a writer has helped as a person by making me more attentive to the message I wish to send. I write for YA and middle grade and I want to express the importance of family in my work.

What does being a successful author look like to you?

A successful author would mean I am able to support my family based on my writing and knowing that my work had meaning to a single person.

Often writers use writing as an outlet for other areas in their lives; what outlet would you say writing provides for you?

Writing is the outlet through which I am able to express my own ideas in my way.

Who would win in a fight: Unicorn or Pegasus?

Pegasus beats Unicorn every time.

What is your favorite marketing technique? How do you get your book in front of people? Or, what have you done in the past to really get people to notice your writing talents? I use a combination of marketing techniques. Interviews like this one, podcasts, Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and reaching out to local newspapers and radio shows.

Do you have any writing blogs you recommend? Any websites that have helped you through writing, publication or even just motivation to write?

I use social media to engage with other authors fir marketing ideas and motivation.

What advice would you give yourself 5 years ago? 10 years ago?

Advice to myself five or ten years ago would be the same, just keep writing.

What, in your opinion, is the most annoying/terrible/unethical practice you see in the publishing industry? The Vanity publishers are the worst thing in publishing. Getting the hopes up of a new author and charging them thousands to get their book published and doing nothing to help sell it, that’s just wrong.

Which would you choose to be if you had too: A literary agent, A publisher, a self-publisher or a vanity publisher? Why?

I would choose to be a literary agent. I think it would be very exciting to help an author achieve their dreams.

What has been your greatest challenge with writing or the writing industry so far?

Marketing has to be the greatest challenge in the writing industry. Until people recognize your name you are basically on your own.

How do you come up with names for your characters?

I’ve used friends’ names for characters, sometimes they just pop in my head, and some come from headstones I’ve seen in cemeteries.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

Best money ever spent has been on marketing. There are some very good sites that promote your book and result in good sales such as bookbub.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

Because I write for a young audience, I would say my greatest influence is my children. I write stories I think they would like, even though they’ve aged out of my target audience at this point.

What is something you want your readers to know about you?

My readers should know that I am very appreciative of them, and that I am a strong advocate of family values. I believe that children succeed when nurtured.

Hey Everyone go show Cris some love and say Hi!
